NAILS · CAREER GUIDE

Nails are one of the easiest ways into the beauty industry. You can work in a salon, rent a chair, or build your own client list. The first question most people ask is simple: which qualification do I need?

01 / THE RULES

Do you need a qualification to do nails?

In most of England there is no single law that says you must hold a nail qualification. In practice, you will need one:

  • Insurance. Most insurers want to see a recognised qualification before they cover you.

  • Councils. Some councils, mainly in London, license nail treatments and set a minimum level.

  • Clients and salons. A recognised certificate shows you have been trained properly in hygiene, safety and nail health.

02 / LEVEL 2

Level 2: the starting point

A Level 2 nail qualification is where most people begin. You learn manicures and pedicures, natural nail care, and safe, clean working. It also covers how to spot conditions you should not treat.

Councils that license manicures and pedicures usually ask for Level 2 as a minimum. If you are new to nails, our CIBTAC Level 2 Nail Treatments course is the right place to start.

03 / LEVEL 3

Level 3: for extensions and enhancements

Want to offer acrylics, gels and extensions? Level 3 takes you further. You learn how to apply, maintain and safely remove enhancements, and how to deal with problems like lifting.

Some councils accept a Level 3 nail technology certificate, such as the CIBTAC Level 3, for extension work. It also shows clients and salons you have gone beyond the basics.
