LASER & LIGHT · CAREER GUIDE

Laser hair removal is one of the most asked-for treatments you can add. Clients book a full course, so it builds steady, repeat income. But before you buy a machine, you need the right training. Here is what that looks like in the UK right now.

01 / THE RULES

Is there one national law for laser in England?

Not yet. The Government has powers to bring in a licensing scheme for non-surgical cosmetic treatments in England, and has said it will. But no start date has been set, and laser and IPL hair removal has not yet been placed in a tier. For now, the rules depend on where you work.

  • In London, you need a special treatment licence from your local council to offer laser or IPL.

  • Outside London, it varies. Some councils run their own registration, others do not. Your insurer will also have its own rules.

Train to the level the strictest councils ask for. Then you are ready wherever you work.

02 / THE QUALIFICATION

What level do councils ask for?

Councils that license laser usually ask for a Level 4 qualification in laser and light treatments. One London council, for example, lists the CIBTAC Level 4 laser and light qualification as acceptable, alongside similar Level 4 awards. Many also ask for "Core of Knowledge" training, which covers laser safety, skin types and how light works on the skin.

A short manufacturer course on one machine is not the same thing. It may teach you the buttons, but it will not usually meet a council's minimum.

03 / THE COURSE

What will you learn on a Level 4 laser course?

  • How laser and IPL work on hair and skin

  • Skin types, and how to choose safe settings

  • Consultation, patch testing and contraindications

  • Laser safety rules and protecting your clinic

  • Aftercare, and what to do if something goes wrong

04 / ENTRY

Do you need to be a beauty therapist first?

Most Level 4 courses expect you to already hold a Level 3 qualification in beauty therapy, or have similar experience. Not sure where you stand? Send us a message and we will tell you honestly which route fits you.
